Over 2000 years old, Vadodara also known as Baroda, is one of the most popular and fasting growing cities in Gujarat. Nestled beautifully on the fertile banks of River Vishwamitri, the city is deeply immersed in culture and rich in history, with equal measures of new and old-world charm.

The city has an interesting folklore and factual anecdote with regard to its name. Home to thousands of Banyan trees scattered all across the city, Vadodara rightfully derives its name from ‘Vato Dara’ which means the ‘Heart of the Banyan Tree’. Nourished by the rich soil and water brought by the river, the trees eventually spread across the city and survived for centuries – making the Banyan an iconic representation of the city.

Vad, which in the local language is Banyan tree, has also held a remarkable significance in Hindu mythology and is highly revered. Considered sacred and associated with Gods and Goddesses – the tree is often referred as God’s shelter to his devotees. An ability to continually grow by itself and survive for centuries, the Banyan tree is a symbol of immortality, longevity and fertility.

The Banyan tree’s power and influence reaches deep into our world. Growing upside down, it is believed to have roots in heavens, bringing the divinity and blessings of the creator to the earth and humankind through its trunk and branches. From providing shelter to our body, to bridging our minds to the supernatural and offering blessings – The banyan is aptly described as the cosmic ‘world tree’.
The tree has always been part of every artist’s consciousness. Taking cue and inspiration from such rich history and heritage of the city, we at Thousand Folds work religiously to handle the provenance and urbanity with equal elan. Through each of our offerings, we aim to explore and uphold the rich culture while maintaining its sanctity, essence and belief.
